Health Promotion Behavior and Perceived Health Status of the Frail and Non-Frail Elderly in a Local Community

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to categorize the elderly of a local community into the frail and non-frail groups based on the definitions of frailty and to compare the two groups on health promoting behavior and perceived health status.

Method: The subjects consisted of 126 elderly that were aged 65 or older. Data collection was performed from January 15th to 30th, 2008. Data was analysed by -test, independent t-test with SPSS WIN 15.0.

Result: The findings were follows: ¨ç Of the 126 subjects, 71.4% were categorized into the frail group and 28.6% into the non-frail group. ¨è The mean number of chronic diseases the frail and non-frail elderly had was 1.83 and 1.47. And there was significant difference between the two group in perceived health status(t=-3.15, p=0.002). ¨é The mean of health promoting behavior the frail and non-frail elderly had was 2.06 and 2.28 score. In subscales, there were significant difference in spiritual growth(t=-3.02, p=0.003) and interpersonal relations(t=-3.18, p=0.002). There was no significant difference in health responsibility(t=-1.75, p=0.081) and nutrition(t=-1.16, p=0.248).

Conclusion: From now, there is a need to categorize the frail elderly in a community, and health promotion program for elderly is needed to develop in the consideration of these findings.
